Two is company, three is...a full bucket of fun

Few years ago I wrote about everyday walks I take with Nero. Well walks haven't changed much, still they had to be modified a bit now that Srećko is walking with us.

Yesterday before the snow started day was nice and sunny and I decided to take a camera to the walk. Since we got Srećko our walks moved from the road to the woods and fields because Srećko has a fetish for cars and as soon as he sees one he wants to catch it and bite the tires. Of course that means I can let him walk without a leash near roads.
Nero on the other hand is still a very good dog and knows that running after cars is forbidden and he can walk without leash all the time.

As soon as we get deeper in the woods I let Srećko run around. He's like a little rocket, runs around like crazy. One minute he's here and the next he's on the other side of the forest.

Two photos taken 5 seconds apart. Now you see me.

Now I'm gone.

From the forest we go to a big field. There are no roads here, only one gravel path so my dogs can run free here.

In the end of the field there are few cottages and vacation homes but neighbours that own that land like animals and they don't mind when dogs run around their houses. Still my little pests never go that far away. They run back to their favourite meadow.

As soon as Srećko gets to the meadow he starts digging.

his digging takes a while so I use that time to enjoy pretty flowers...

yup he's still digging

...and the sight of Nero surrounded with flowers...

if I dig hard enough maybe I'll find a big bone...or a mouse
Soon (after 45 minutes) Nero loses interest in standing around and starts walking home and I follow.

Are you coming home today?

Srećko...still digging...

While we're waiting for his Lordship to finish digging we enjoy the company of Luna, our neighbour.
No,they're not siblings, just look the same :D
We love eachother very much.
After almost an hour Srećko finally finished digging.

And the weather was quickly changing so it was the time to run home.

Well at least Nero was running home...

Srećko wasn't in the mood to go home. He just wanted to sleep.

Which he did whole afternoon.

Orchard beauty

Unusually warm beginning of April was very beneficial for my orchard. Trees had lots of flowers on them and many of them turned into little fruits.

Cherries and plums have finished flowering process. If the weather doesn't bring us frost or strong winds we could have nice harvest.

Apples are blooming and making fruits at same time. I was surprised to see the amount of small fruits on every branch. Hopefully lots of them will survive and continue growing.

Quince started blooming last week, like every year she is packed with flowers. I'm not sure I'm happy with all this flowers. They mean tree will be full of fruits again. There is no way we can use all the fruits so there will be a lot of waste again.

Blackberries will also bloom soon. Branches are full of small buds. If the weather will be good we could get around 50kg of blackberries again.

Right next to the blackberries is my horseradish bush. It has been here over 20 years and it's still growing and blooming.

Each year around Easter I dig out some of the roots to make sauce with ham (Croatian traditional Easter meal). By next Easter the remaining roots fill the empty space and I can harvest it again.

EDIT 7:02pm : So much for my warm weather wishes. It's snowing outside.

Weekly review 18.04. - 26.04.2016

After weeks of warm weather we fell down to early spring temperatures. Daily temperatures are fairy warm with weeks high at 22°C (71 F) but morning temperatures are very very low. They started dropping from last Wednesday and today we reached minimal temperatures. This morning we had only -2.7°C (26 F), temperatures 5cm from the ground were even worse. Here we had around -5°C

Next few days don't look any better and it even seems we could get some snow.

Of course that means every not protected delicate plant got (or will get) frozen and destroyed. Luckily I still haven't planted any of my seedlings outside. I follow the rule "no planting before May 15th" and if we don't have a very warm year I don't touch my seedlings until that date.
Still I had to protect my seedlings with extra blankets and bedsheets.

Some of my tomatoes grew too tall due to the too warm beginning of the April. So now I had to place a stick and keep them in the house during the night.

There is not much going on in my garden. My peas are out. I've sown two varieties. This year they are American wonder and Villo.

I tried removing the weeds but most of the A. wonder stayed covered in weeds. Couch grass is covering my small peas and pulling them out means pulling out my peas too. I'll have to wait for my peas to grow stronger before weeding the garden.

As for my orchard it seems being surrounded with woods helps to keep it warmer than the rest of the village. My trees weren't affected with frost. More about orchard tomorrow in orchard review.

Indoors again

Just when I thought this year we will avoid low morning temperatures and seedling moving this week proved me wrong.
Since Tuesday morning temperatures have started dropping each morning. Today we had 2°C

Whole week doesn't look any better. Temperatures for Zagreb are below 10°C which means 2 or 3 °C less here. Cold enough for me to start moving my seedlings back inside.
Most of my seedlings have again filled all my windows. Only things left outside are part of peppers , tomatoes and beans that have been moved to covered shelves instead of open ones.

tomatoes and flowers

pumpkins and watermelons

chilli peppers

I have already transplanted some of my chilly peppers to big pots and they can't be moved inside so they got cold protection.

Red basket of fire, Peter pepper and Naga Jolokia

Sadly I didn't react soon enough and my ipomea already got cold weather bites.

Now I can only hope there will be no more damage.
